Provide exciting rewards to all children who complete their charts. Post the charts on the wall and celebrate “following directions from friends”!

Variations. If you have experienced players or quick learners, you may consider playing the traditional version of the game by having the children only follow the directions when Simon says to do so. However, the point of the game is to provide practice following directions from peers, so avoid playing this way if it distracts from the major purpose.

Challenge for Step 1. Tell students,

We have played Simon Says and practiced following directions from our friends. Now, here is our challenge! You’re going to play that game all by yourselves, and I’m just going to watch. For this game, each Simon will only give two directions and then will pull the number for the next Simon. Everyone who follows directions from all of the Simons will get the first puzzle piece!

When each child has met the challenge, provide a celebration ceremony similar to that described in Step 1 of Skill #1.
